I will try to fill in as much intriguing trivia as I can correlate to this answer and possibly take references from other answers on Quora.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Coming across this question just made me remind that&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/myanimelist.net\/anime\/5688\/Gegege_no_Kitarou_1968\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Gegege no Kitarou (1968)<\/a>&nbsp;(an anime from Winter 1968) has completed 50 years and in order to commemorate that, a new season of the same is in production during Spring 2018.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Prior to 1960s: Folklore, shorts and propaganda movies<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Due to this question, I looked into season-wise MAL archive and came to know that there are animated shorts, single episode anime or anime movies\u00a0as old as 1917! And indeed the wiki does agree with me. The anime I am talking about is\u00a0Namakura Gatana\u00a0and is about a samurai&#8217;s foolish purchase of a dull-edged sword. Since it&#8217;s 1917, expect no dialogue and sound.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Those were the days when anime was not looked at from a commercial perspective. So I gotta fast forward a few years here.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Courtesy of a knowledgeable acquaintance of mine on Quora,&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.quora.com\/profile\/Manish-Kumar-Ghora\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Manish<\/a>, I came to know that&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/myanimelist.net\/anime\/2765\/Momotarou__Umi_no_Shinpei?q=momotarou%20sac\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Momotarou: Umi no Shinpei<\/a>&nbsp;was the first feature-length Japanese animated movie produced&nbsp;<strong>in 1945&nbsp;<\/strong>under an order of the Japanese Naval Ministry as a propaganda to ensure further recruitment for World War II.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>The 1960s: Disney\u2019s influence on Tezuka<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>The first anime series to come out after Walt Disney\u2019s influence on the animators was\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/myanimelist.net\/anime\/14213\/Otogi_Manga_Calendar?q=otogi%20man\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Otogi Manga Calendar<\/a>\u00a0<strong>in 1962<\/strong>. After some random clicking, it was seen that a handful of anime were being produced in the late 60s. The only anime, I have watched among those is Gegege no Kitarou which is celebrating 50 years since it started airing in 1968 alongside the longest-running manga, Golgo 13 which still comes up with its scheduled monthly issue without fail. It is also suspected that the production of Dragonball Super was halted to divert some of the animators to Gegege no Kitarou.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/qph.cf2.quoracdn.net\/main-qimg-c4e1f10432ce9525bd24f99bb0cb0c00-lq\" alt=\"\"\/><figcaption>&#8220;Somebody toucha my Spagett&#8230;&#8221; &#8211; Just for the Memes<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>Those were the days when more importance was given to folklore, shorts and yet the anime had not reached the full commercial scale due to high costs. Osamu Tezuka (also known as&nbsp;<em>Manga no Kami<\/em>) adapted and simplified many animation techniques of Disney and was able to bring down the costs to a certain extent. The late 60s also saw the production of<strong>&nbsp;Sazae-san<\/strong>&nbsp;which is an ongoing anime with more than 7500+ episodes to its credit.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/qph.cf2.quoracdn.net\/main-qimg-eb66cfd5fca15f5df08f98664523fc82-lq\" alt=\"\"\/><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>The 1970s: Expansion beyond folklores, commercialization and emergence of all-time<\/strong> Japanese favourites<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Japanese are known to devour mecha and space genre<\/strong>\u00a0anime but it was not until the 70s which is evident from this link which ranks favourite anime amongst Japanese which was again shared by Manish (<a href=\"https:\/\/myanimelist.net\/news\/50582644\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">NHK Announces Best 100 Anime<\/a>).<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The anime which changed the very definition of how people view anime was&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/myanimelist.net\/anime\/80\/Mobile_Suit_Gundam?q=gundam\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Mobile Suit Gundam<\/a>. The influence it has exerted is so great that an entire amusement park has been commemorated in its name and Akiba is filled with figurines of Gundam characters and robots till date. Every second shounen anime shows the&nbsp;<strong>Japanese obsession with robots<\/strong>, the best examples being&nbsp;<em>Kochikame<\/em>,&nbsp;<em>Shin-chan<\/em>&nbsp;and even&nbsp;<em>Dragonball<\/em>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/qph.cf2.quoracdn.net\/main-qimg-9a46a696deff7cc4f23207fa5cff8651-lq\" alt=\"\"\/><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>The 70s also gave rise to&nbsp;<strong>Ashita no Joe&nbsp;<\/strong>which is considered as a pioneer for anime involving&nbsp;<strong>action sequences<\/strong>&nbsp;especially wrestling or boxing anime and has been an inspiration for&nbsp;<em>Hajime no Ippo<\/em>&nbsp;along with the&nbsp;<strong>trope of having a rival&nbsp;<\/strong>as great as Rikiishi.&nbsp;<strong>(SPOILER ALERT)<\/strong>&nbsp;The impact of his death was so huge that a special funeral was organised for him by his fans.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/qph.cf2.quoracdn.net\/main-qimg-22081b2978c061a11df15c9eb22f3228-lq\" alt=\"\"\/><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>Also, the 70s had witnessed a once-in-a-lifetime collaboration of its kind which gave birth to\u00a0<strong>Lupin III<\/strong>. The collaboration was between Hayao Miyazaki and Isao Takahata.\u00a0<strong>Lupin III Part 5<\/strong>\u00a0is currently being produced. Such has been its popularity!<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/qph.cf2.quoracdn.net\/main-qimg-c60252bdf3663f96251180419661853b-pjlq\" alt=\"\"\/><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>For some odd reason, characters from the 70s had bushy eyebrows. Maybe it was because you may not need to draw beautiful eyes as is the case with contemporary anime due to those overpowering eyebrows.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>The 1980s: Post-apocalyptic<\/strong> genre, anime filmography, Captain Tsubasa, the <strong>rise of Toriyama as a shounen god and recognition of comedy as a separate genre<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The 80s still had a lot of anime which pertained to the mecha genre such as\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/myanimelist.net\/anime\/3044\/Tetsuwan_Atom_1980?q=astroboy\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Tetsuwan Atom (1980)<\/a>\u00a0by Osamu Tezuka and\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/myanimelist.net\/anime\/2222\/Dr_Slump__Arale-chan?q=dr%20slump\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Dr. Slump: Arale-chan<\/a>\u00a0(1981) by Akira Toriyama. Since the 80s is a bit longer to discuss, I have to break it down further.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/qph.cf2.quoracdn.net\/main-qimg-0ae9e59651d9f461a2f67c18c49e8c6a-lq\" alt=\"\"\/><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/qph.cf2.quoracdn.net\/main-qimg-2c561810147a3208243c76d6516fba61-lq\" alt=\"\"\/><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong><em>Anime Filmography<\/em><\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>But the 80s was also the time wherein\u00a0Kaze no Tani no Nausica\u00e4\u00a0brought Studio Ghibli to the limelight which paved the way for post-apocalyptic genre anime such as\u00a0Akira\u00a0(1988) and\u00a0Neon Genesis Evangelion\u00a0(1995). What followed was\u00a0Hotaru no Haka\u00a0(1988) which is regarded as one of the greatest war movies of all time. Studio Ghibli\u2019s\u00a0Majo no Takkyuubin\u00a0was the top-grossing film for 1989.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/qph.cf2.quoracdn.net\/main-qimg-67313dc3d17dc0caee569bec1db317ed.webp\" alt=\"\"\/><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>Most importantly, the 80s witnessed Akira which is said to have inspired The Matrix, Inception and also served as an inspiration for videography to one of my favourite rap songs,\u00a0<em>Stronger<\/em>\u00a0from\u00a0<em>Graduation<\/em>\u00a0by\u00a0<em>Kanye West<\/em>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/qph.cf2.quoracdn.net\/main-qimg-9cf2fd69c000f9f0a93b6c1ee0a11a48-lq\" alt=\"\"\/><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong><em>Captain Tsubasa<\/em><\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/myanimelist.net\/anime\/2116\/Captain_Tsubasa?q=captain%20tsubasa\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Captain Tsubasa<\/a>&nbsp;is one of the most important anime for sports genre which encouraged anime from other sports genre such as&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/myanimelist.net\/anime\/170\/Slam_Dunk?q=slam%20dunk\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Slam Dunk<\/a>&nbsp;for Basketball. It also&nbsp;<strong>influenced Stephen Chow\u2019s&nbsp;<\/strong><strong><em>Shaolin Soccer<\/em><\/strong>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/qph.cf2.quoracdn.net\/main-qimg-fde33a823880f5bc6b81be15841c0f11-lq\" alt=\"\"\/><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong><em>Toriyama strikes!<\/em><\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>As if Dr. Slump was not enough!\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/myanimelist.net\/anime\/223\/Dragon_Ball\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Dragon Ball<\/a>\u00a0started airing in 1986 and acted as an inspiration for eons of shounen mangaka giving rise to\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/myanimelist.net\/anime\/20\/Naruto?q=naruto\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Naruto<\/a><em>,\u00a0<\/em><a href=\"https:\/\/myanimelist.net\/anime\/21\/One_Piece?q=one%20piece\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">One Piece<\/a><em>,\u00a0<\/em><a href=\"https:\/\/myanimelist.net\/anime\/269\/Bleach\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Bleach<\/a>\u00a0each with legacies of their own. Dragonball has since then been translated into numerous languages and is regarded as the anime which introduced the anime to the western part of the globe. The 80s also witnessed the first instances of the use of CGI animation and hence, it couldn\u2019t have been better for Dragonball\u2019s fast action sequences.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/qph.cf2.quoracdn.net\/main-qimg-5f92d58cd3d5371287022b7137f5bccf-lq\" alt=\"\"\/><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong><em>Comedy and the trope of a lecherous old man<\/em><\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>The 80s also saw the rise of anime from the comedy genre such as\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/myanimelist.net\/anime\/210\/Ranma_%C2%BD?q=ranma\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Ranma \u00bd<\/a>,\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/myanimelist.net\/anime\/1453\/Maison_Ikkoku?q=maison%20ikkoku\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Maison Ikkoku<\/a>\u00a0and\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/myanimelist.net\/anime\/1470\/City_Hunter?q=city%20hunter\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">City Hunter<\/a>\u00a0which went on to\u00a0<strong>inspire the Jackie Chan starrer City Hunter in 1993<\/strong>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Anime such as&nbsp;<em>Ranma 1\/2&nbsp;<\/em>and<em>&nbsp;Dragonball&nbsp;<\/em>explored the&nbsp;<strong>trope of a lecherous old man<\/strong>&nbsp;and gave us legends in the form of Happosai and Master Roshi respectively. It is the only other anime I could think of which introduced anime in the west other than Dragonball.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/qph.cf2.quoracdn.net\/main-qimg-e1f90fd923e5cb3e4396c1d620b522dc.webp\" alt=\"\"\/><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p><strong><em>Satoshi Kon introduces psychological thrillers and unreliable narration<\/em><\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Satoshi Kon was a genius that gave us psychological thrillers such as&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/myanimelist.net\/anime\/437\/Perfect_Blue?q=perfect%20blue\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Perfect Blue<\/a>&nbsp;(1998). This movie further lead to other giants such as&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/myanimelist.net\/anime\/323\/Mousou_Dairinin?q=paranoia\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Mousou Dairinin<\/a>&nbsp;and&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/myanimelist.net\/anime\/1943\/Paprika?q=paprika\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Paprika<\/a>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/qph.cf2.quoracdn.net\/main-qimg-342ee5ae44ca0792fe8fa8ea942a789c-lq\" alt=\"\"\/><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong><em>Sailor Moon<\/em><\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>Enough entertainment for teenage boys! That\u2019s what&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/myanimelist.net\/anime\/530\/Bishoujo_Senshi_Sailor_Moon?q=sailor%20moon\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Bishoujo Senshi Sailor Moon<\/a>&nbsp;(1992) screamed with its art, and a female dominated story line. It has a massive cult following, according to a study has more than 3 million websites to its credit and popularized the concept of fan fictions. The Sailor Moon merchandise is one of the highest selling anime merchandises out there rivaling Dragonball and Pokemon. It is also known to have&nbsp;<strong>influenced Powerpuff Girls<\/strong>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>The 2000s and 2010s: Slice of Life, shorter series, Death Note, animation quality and legacy of the ancestors<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The 2000s began with a bang for the anime industry! Hayao Miyazaki\u2019s&nbsp;<em>Spirited Away<\/em>&nbsp;went on to win the Oscar for best animated film.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/qph.cf2.quoracdn.net\/main-qimg-344df71f5bb8ddea5ce7a658cd8eaae8-lq\" alt=\"\"\/><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong><em>Slice of Life<\/em><\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>By this time, almost all of the genre had a vast array of anime be it sports, shounen, shoujo, seinen, comedy, drama, psychological and so on and so forth. However, one of the genre remained under explored. And that would be Slice of Life.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>As per MAL database, Slice of Life has around 1500 anime rivaling that of shounen, school and surpassing supernatural as well as psychological genre. This shows how high the acceptability rate for SoL really is! We have had giants from the genre such as&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/myanimelist.net\/anime\/2167\/Clannad\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Clannad<\/a>,&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/myanimelist.net\/anime\/12189\/Hyouka\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Hyouka<\/a>,&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/myanimelist.net\/anime\/4224\/Toradora\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Toradora!<\/a>&nbsp;and&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/myanimelist.net\/anime\/245\/Great_Teacher_Onizuka\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Great Teacher Onizuka<\/a>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/qph.cf2.quoracdn.net\/main-qimg-04c15627da09a36d5d2d8379bab04aec-lq\" alt=\"clannad\"\/><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong><em>Shorter series<\/em><\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>As the world is getting more and more competitive, people no longer have the time to watch the likes of One Piece.
